A Year In Review: 2008

Our Youth Are Facing Many Challenges Today

Youth and young adults today practice unhealthy behaviors such as tobacco smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of physical exercise and poor diet. In Colorado, the African American population consistently has the highest rate of death from heart disease than all other ethnic groups. During the past 10-15 years, heart disease has become a major health issue for African American women. Only half of African American adults participate in some form of regular physical activity. More than 8 million African Americans live in poverty in the United States. 32% of African Americans do not have a regular doctor. Nearly 70% of African American adults ages 20-74 are overweight. More than half of all African American women are overweight. Early detection and education can help prevent these diseases.
